Surfist Manifesto
A framework for adapting to disruptive technological change.
The world of digital product design is undergoing a major disruption. AI and automation are reshaping what it means to be a designer, and many are worried about their future—I believe unnecessarily so. The disruption we're experiencing is not a threat, it's an opportunity. The most successful designers I know aren't panicking; they're adapting. They're what I call "surfists."
I'm Brian Williams, creator of Rockturn and a veteran of the design industry. After two decades of leading design teams through waves of technological change, I've seen firsthand how the most successful designers approach disruption.
Surfists understand that resisting change is futile. Instead, they ride the wave. They're curious about new technologies, creative in applying them, and confident in their ability to add value beyond what any tool can do. While AI excels at generating mockups and iterating on patterns, it falls short in grasping the raw, visceral nature of human experience. Surfists know that their uniquely human capacity for empathy, emotional intelligence, and nuanced understanding of how people truly engage with technology is irreplaceable. This is where great designers don't just shine – they become indispensable.
To empower this Surfist mindset, I created the Rockturn compendium. It's a curated knowledge base that helps designers broaden their expertise across design, technology, business, and psychology. The insights Rockturn provides are crucial for designers looking to increase their strategic influence and problem-solving capabilities. By acquiring a more diverse range of practical knowledge, designers can position themselves as key players in product strategy and innovation, while adopting AI as a second brain for problem-solving.
The Surfist Manifesto lays out ten principles for thriving in this new era of design. It's a guide to leveraging technology to amplify our impact and evolve our role in the product development process. If you're ready to stop treading water and start surfing the waves of change, you're in the right place. Let's dive in.

Be Humble
Humility is the cornerstone of the Surfist philosophy, serving as the foundation for continuous learning and growth. As AI and automation reshape traditional roles, humility becomes more crucial than ever. As C.S. Lewis famously said, humility is not about thinking less of yourself, but thinking of yourself less. It may seem trite, but it's true.
Embracing humility means acknowledging that there's always more to learn, especially in a field as dynamic as design. It's the courage to be vulnerable, to admit when you don't have all the answers, and to remain open to new ideas and perspectives. This openness is what allows you to surf the waves of change rather than being overwhelmed by them.
Humility unlocks your imagination, enabling curiosity. It frees you from the fear of judgment, allowing you to ask questions, explore new territories, and take creative risks. By lowering your guard and lifting others up, you create an environment conducive to collaboration and innovation.
We must remember that humility is a sign of strength, not weakness. It's the quiet confidence that comes from knowing you can always grow and improve. As more and more technical skills are replicated with AI, your humility – your ability to learn, adapt, and connect with others – becomes your greatest asset.
Be Relentlessly Curious
Curiosity is the engine that drives the Surfist mindset, and it's deeply intertwined with humility. It's the insatiable desire to understand, explore, and question that propels you forward in life and in your career. Curiosity is the essential thing that turns these waves of technological change from threats into opportunities.
This principle is part of a powerful cycle: humility enables curiosity, which fuels creativity, which in turn builds confidence. As you explore new ideas and technologies with an open, humble mind, you discover fascinating connections and unexpected possibilities. These insights spark your creativity, leading to innovative solutions. As you successfully apply these creative ideas, your confidence grows.
Here's where the cycle completes itself beautifully: this newfound confidence makes you feel safe enough to be vulnerable, which is key to unlocking authentic humility. You're willing to let your guard down, to subdue the pride reflex that might otherwise hold you back. This humility then feeds back into your curiosity, creating a self-reinforcing loop—a virtuous cycle of growth and progress.
Being relentlessly curious means never settling for the status quo. It means constantly asking "why?" and "what if?" It's the willingness to venture into unknown waters, to challenge assumptions, and to seek insights beyond your immediate understanding.
As routine tasks are increasingly automated, your curiosity, fueled by humility and reinforced by confidence, becomes a key differentiator. It enables you to anticipate trends, identify opportunities, and truly innovate in surprisingly creative ways. By cultivating relentless curiosity, you ensure that you're always learning, always growing, and always ready to ride the next wave of change.
Embrace Change
The essence of the Surfist philosophy is to ride the waves of change rather than swim against them. Change is not just constant—it's accelerating. Embracing change means viewing technological advancements, shifting market dynamics, and evolving user behaviors not as disruptors of stability, but as currents that can propel us toward growth and innovation. Again, a surfist knows that resistance is futile. Changes such as these are like the forces of nature that we can either harness for advancement and transformation, or turn and run from, but we cannot—and should not—try to stop.
This principle builds on the foundation of humility and curiosity. Humility allows you to acknowledge that your current knowledge and skills may not be sufficient for future challenges. Curiosity drives you to explore and understand these changes. Together, they enable you to approach change with an open mind and a willingness to learn and adapt.
Embracing change requires a shift in mindset. Instead of clinging to familiar tools and processes, you learn to be flexible and adaptable. You cultivate the ability to quickly assess new technologies, methodologies, and trends, determining how they can enhance your work and expand your capabilities.
This principle also involves proactively seeking out change. Like a surfer paddling out to meet the next big wave, you actively look for emerging trends and technologies that could reshape your field. You experiment with new tools, explore different approaches, and consistently push yourself out of your comfort zone.
By embracing change, you position yourself at the forefront of innovation. You become a leader in your field, guiding others through the turbulent waters of technological disruption. Your ability to adapt and evolve is your greatest asset. Embrace change, and ready yourself to catch the next wave of opportunity.
Amplify Your Imagination
AI is redefining the boundaries of feasibility and practicality for every industry it touches. As the map of digital design gets redrawn, your ability to amplify imagination through AI determines your impact and relevance. Embracing AI as a powerful ally propels your ideas into uncharted realms, enabling unprecedented levels of productivity, influence, and precision. We are lucky to live in such a transformative era when the synergy between human creativity and artificial intelligence sets new standards for innovation and artistic expression.
Consider how a surfer uses a board to ride waves they wouldn't imagine navigating alone. As a form of enabling technology, a surfboard opens a swimmer’s mind to begin thinking and acting like a surfer. Similarly, you can leverage AI to explore creative territories that were previously beyond your imagination. These tools can generate countless variations with variables you conceive of. They can process vast amounts of data for you to interpret. They can synthesize intriguing insights that spark new ideas based on the purposeful prompts you provide. It's your uniquely human imagination that gives these outputs meaning, context, and emotional resonance.
Amplifying your imagination involves a collaborative approach with technology. You provide the vision, emotional intelligence, and deep understanding of human needs. AI becomes your co-creator, helping to visualize concepts, rapidly test iterations, and even suggest unexpected directions. This collaboration allows you to focus on the higher-order aspects of design—strategy, empathy, and innovation—while AI handles more routine tasks.
Yet, amplifying your imagination involves much more than using new tools. It requires cultivating a mindset of limitless possibility, asking "what if" and “why not” questions that push your creativity beyond standard notions or conventional boundaries. By combining your human creativity with the analytical power of AI, you can conceive and create solutions that neither human nor machine could develop independently.
Remember, while AI is a powerful tool, your imagination is a potential super power. By amplifying your imagination, you ensure that you remain an irreplaceable part of the design process, regardless of how sophisticated our technological tools become.
Push Human Authenticity
As our world becomes increasingly shaped by machines, the ability to infuse design with genuine human touch becomes increasingly more valuable. This principle encourages you to master and champion the visceral, emotional aspects of design that machines cannot replicate.
More than mere aesthetics, human authenticity in design is about creating experiences that resonate on a deeply human level, evoking emotions, building connections, and telling stories that reflect the complexity of human life. As a designer, you have the unique ability to understand and translate human needs, desires, and quirks into meaningful solutions.
While AI can analyze data and generate options, it can't replicate human empathy, intuition, or lived experience. Your role is to bring these quintessentially human elements to the forefront of your work. This might involve incorporating subtle design cues that trigger emotional responses, crafting user journeys that anticipate and address human uncertainties, or developing brand voices that feel authentically personal.
Pushing human authenticity also means advocating for ethical, inclusive design practices. It involves considering the diverse range of human experiences and ensuring that your designs are accessible and meaningful to your users.
Collaborate Aggressively
As a designer, collaboration isn't optional—it's crucial. A surfist sees collaboration as a strategy for navigating the complicated and evolving relationship between technology and society. Collaborating aggressively means actively seeking out diverse perspectives, breaking down silos, and bridging domains to design solutions that are—as product management legend Marty Cagan would say—more valuable, useable, feasible, and viable.
This principle challenges you to step out of your comfort zone and engage with professionals from various fields—engineers, marketers, psychologists, business strategists, and more. By doing so, you gain insights that can dramatically expand your problem-solving capabilities and enrich your designs.
Aggressive collaboration also means being proactive in sharing your knowledge and skills; generously contributing your expertise while remaining humble enough to learn from others. Taking such an approach will foster a far better culture of mutual growth and shared accountability.
In practice, this might involve initiating cross-functional projects, participating in hackathons, or even seeking out mentorship opportunities—both as a mentor and a mentee. A surfist would make it their goal to create a network of diverse talents that can be mobilized to tackle the most complex challenges as a team.
Elevate Your Problem-Solving
As AI increasingly automates what we do for a living, designers who think like surfists are shifting their focus from routine tasks to higher-order problem-solving. This principle encourages you to leverage technological advancements as allies, freeing you to tackle more complex, nuanced challenges that machines cannot address.
Embracing automation for repetitive tasks allows you to dedicate your energy to strategic thinking, innovation, and addressing intricate human needs. By doing so, you elevate your role from a creator of artifacts to a solver of meaningful problems.
This elevation requires developing a broader perspective, seeking a deeper understanding of business objectives, user psychology, and technological capabilities to craft holistic solutions. You'll need to hone your analytical skills, learning to synthesize diverse data points into coherent strategies.
Elevating your problem-solving also means adopting a systems thinking approach. Rather than focusing on isolated issues, you'll need to consider how various elements interact within larger ecosystems. This holistic view enables you to create solutions with far-reaching positive impacts.
This principle challenges you to tackle increasingly abstract and ambiguous problems. As AI handles more concrete tasks, your value lies in navigating uncertainty, defining problems worth solving, and envisioning future scenarios. AI is there to do your bidding. Use it to see further, go faster, and equip you with insights to unlock more creativity.
By elevating your problem-solving capabilities, you position yourself as an indispensable strategic partner in any organization. You become not just a designer of products or services, but an architect of solutions that shape the future of human experiences in our technology-driven world.
Balance Intellect and Intuition
As it has always been, but AI makes us more acutely aware, a designer’s success hinges on the ability to harmonize analytical thinking with creative instinct. This principle encourages you to cultivate both your rational and intuitive faculties, creating a synergy that leads to more novel and effective problem-solving.
It takes a lot of intellectual rigor to deepen your understanding of business strategies, engineering principles, and psychological theories. It requires staying on top of industry trends, interpreting nuanced signals, and making informed, evidence-based decisions. This analytical approach helps you justify design choices and align your work with broader organizational goals.
At the same time, you must nurture your intuition—that gut feeling honed through years of experience and countless interactions with users. Intuition often guides you to unexpected solutions, helps you anticipate users' needs, and enables good judgment in ambiguous situations.
The magic happens when these two modes of thinking work in tandem. Use data and analysis to inform your creative process, but don't let it stifle your imaginative leaps. Let your intuition guide you to novel ideas, then validate and refine them through intellectual scrutiny.
This balance is particularly crucial in an AI-augmented design environment. While AI excels at processing vast amounts of data and generating options, it lacks human intuition and emotional intelligence. By harmonizing your analytical and intuitive capabilities, you bring a more informed, authentic human perspective to the design process.
Cultivating this balance requires continuous learning and self-reflection. Engage in both structured study and free-form exploration. Practice data analysis, but also spend time sketching, brainstorming, and engaging in creative pursuits. By honing both your intellect and intuition, you'll develop a more nuanced, adaptable approach to design challenges.
Cultivate Adaptability
Because change is constant and relentless, adaptability is not just an asset—it's a necessity. This principle encourages you to develop the flexibility and resilience needed to thrive amid the uncertainty of emerging technologies and evolving expectations that are the determinants of good design. Cultivating adaptability means working to develop the growth mindset and commitment to continuous learning that make you curious, creative, and confident.
However, being adaptable doesn't mean abandoning your core principles or expertise. Instead, it involves building upon your foundational knowledge, allowing it to expand in more than one direction. This might involve learning a new programming language, exploring an unfamiliar approach to problem-solving, or even reimagining your role within your organization. Think of yourself as a tree: your roots (core skills and values) remain strong, while your branches (areas of expertise) never stop reaching higher and wider as you grow and adapt to the changing environment.
Cultivating adaptability means building a diverse network and support system of connections in other disciplines, exposing you to different perspectives that help you spot emerging trends early and navigate changes in your field. It also means practicing scenario planning to enhance your readiness to pivot when disruptive change occurs. Contemplating potential industry shifts and how they might affect your work prepares you adapt proactively—as a leader—making you less vulnerable to chaotic forces that react hastily in the face of change.
Your ability to adapt is yet another one of your greatest assets as a designer. By cultivating this skill, you position yourself to ride the waves of change with confidence and grace, always ready to meet new challenges and seize fresh opportunities.
Persevere with Grit
Design is a dynamic field where change is constant, challenges are complex, and criticism is unrelenting. You cannot be weak-willed or fickle and hope to get even a glimpse of real success in this profession. Perseverance is paramount. This final and perhaps most important principle emphasizes the significance of grit—a potent combination of passion and persistence—in achieving long-term success and driving meaningful innovation.
Grit in design means staying committed to your goals, even when faced with setbacks or obstacles. Lifelong amateurs are those who maneuver for safety and comfort when difficulties arise. The ability to maintain enthusiasm and drive—not just when the creative process flows smoothly but especially in moments of adversity or self-doubt—is a hallmark of the professional.
This perseverance is crucial when tackling complex problems that don't have immediate solutions. In an age where AI can quickly generate multiple options, your ability to dig deep, iterate relentlessly, and push through challenges sets you apart. It's this human tenacity that often leads to breakthrough innovations and designs that truly resonate with users.
Cultivating grit involves developing a growth mindset. View failures and setbacks not as endpoints, but as valuable learning experiences that bring you closer to your goals. Embrace criticism and feedback as opportunities for improvement rather than personal affronts.
Grit also means staying true to your vision and values, even when easier paths present themselves. Summon the fortitude to make hard choices that align with long-term goals rather than opting for quick fixes or trendy solutions that may not stand the test of time.
Remember, the most impactful designs often emerge from sustained effort and multiple iterations. By persevering with grit, you demonstrate the uniquely human capacity to envision a better future and work tirelessly to bring it into reality. That's what designers do.
In the face of rapid technological advancements, your grit—your unwavering commitment to creating meaningful, human-centered designs—becomes a powerful differentiator. It's what will enable you to ride even the most challenging waves of change, emerging not just as a survivor, but as a leader shaping the future of design.
But adopting this mindset is just the beginning. To truly embody the Surfist approach, you need a broad base of knowledge that spans design, technology, business, and human behavior.
